Anaesthetic Gas Monitoring Kits

At RTW Systems, our easy-to-use anaesthetic gas monitoring kits assist veterinary practices to check whether staff are being exposed to waste anaesthetic gases during day-to-day clinical work. Suitable for practices using inhalational anaesthetic agents such as isoflurane, sevoflurane and nitrous oxide, they offer a reliable way to monitor staff exposure, support COSHH compliance and maintain practice standards.

Why Monitor Waste Anaesthetic Gases?

Waste anaesthetic gases can enter the workplace during routine veterinary procedures, which is why regular monitoring is an important part of protecting your team. Veterinary practices have a duty to protect staff from exposure under COSHH (2002) and to consider the workplace exposure limits set out in EH40.

Practice Standards schemes also requires practices to keep written evidence of anaesthetic gas monitoring and wider risk control measures. Regular monitoring helps show that your scavenging systems, ventilation and working procedures are effective. It gives you confidence that exposure is being properly controlled.

Testing is straightforward and is designed to fit around normal work hours. The sample will then be returned for analysis, and a written report will be given for your records. Your written report can be filed with your COSHH paperwork, health and safety records, and Practice Standards documentation. This makes it easier to show that monitoring has been carried out.

Veterinary practices commonly carry out anaesthetic gas monitoring at the following times:

  • Annually
  • After changes to anaesthetic machines, circuits or scavenging systems
  • After building, ventilation or refurbishment work
  • If staff have concerns about exposure
  • Before a Practice Standards assessment

Helping You Stay Compliant

Our veterinary anaesthetic gas monitoring kits support testing for commonly used agents, including:

Isoflurane

Sevoflurane

Nitrous oxide

The RCVS module lists the following current workplace limits, calculated as 8-hour Time Weighted Average values:

Agent Current limit
Halothane 10 ppm
Isoflurane 50 ppm
Sevoflurane 60 ppm
Nitrous oxide 100 ppm

These values may be reviewed or updated, so practices should always refer to the latest HSE and RCVS guidance.

At RTW Systems, our anaesthetic gas monitoring kits give your practice clear written evidence that exposure monitoring has been completed. They offer a practical way to support your COSHH responsibilities, check that workplace exposure is being controlled, and prepare for Practice Standards inspections with confidence.

Please note:

Our test kits support anaesthetic gas exposure monitoring and record keeping. They do not replace a COSHH risk assessment, equipment servicing, scavenging checks or professional health and safety advice.
