Why Monitor Waste Anaesthetic Gases?

Waste anaesthetic gases can enter the workplace during routine veterinary procedures, which is why regular monitoring is an important part of protecting your team. Veterinary practices have a duty to protect staff from exposure under COSHH (2002) and to consider the workplace exposure limits set out in EH40.

Practice Standards schemes also requires practices to keep written evidence of anaesthetic gas monitoring and wider risk control measures. Regular monitoring helps show that your scavenging systems, ventilation and working procedures are effective. It gives you confidence that exposure is being properly controlled.

Testing is straightforward and is designed to fit around normal work hours. The sample will then be returned for analysis, and a written report will be given for your records. Your written report can be filed with your COSHH paperwork, health and safety records, and Practice Standards documentation. This makes it easier to show that monitoring has been carried out.
